Blog Post 9, Part 1: Creative Project on Vernon God Little

Title: Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre
Essence: The only way to survive is to take matters into your own hands and fight for yourself; to be your own God.
Brief Summary of Text:
Vernon Little is an average teenager living in the small Texan town of Martirio. That is, until his best friend Jesus guns down 16 fellow students before offing himself. Pinned down as an accomplice for the murders, Vernon flees town, heading down to Mexico. Hot on his trail are the town authorities, the media, and the man at the center of it all, Eulalio Ledesma. Vernon is discovered after three days in Mexico, arrested, and tried. The trial is unjust, blown out of proportion,  highly covered by the media, and eventually lands Vernon on death row. As his execution date approaches, Vernon realizes he must take matters into his own hands, pulling together friends and family in a last ditch attempt that saves his life. Vernon goes home long enough to see that everyone in his life is now safe and happy. Then heads back to Mexico to live his life his own way.
Prompt:
2006, Form B. In many works of literature, a physical journey – the literal movement from one place to another – plays a central role. Choose a novel, play, or epic poem in which a physical journey is an important element and discuss how the journey adds to the meaning of the work as a whole. Avoid mere plot summary.
Thesis:
After being accused of accessory to murder, Vernon of D B C Pierre’s Vernon God Little sets off on a journey to Mexico that, by distancing himself from home, allows him to discover his own strengths and learn how to help himself when the world is pushing him down.
